This substantial instrument stands within a red brick building which has the theme of ‘ein fest burg’, the weighty castellations on the top of the building indicating a fortress. The organ is also designed with some embedded emblems, the sitka spruce pipes of the Swell representing a crown, the implied five crosses in the Great and Pedal with a dove of peace, all capped by impressionistic cresting. The case is of solid Afromosia with front pipes of tin and burnished plain copper. The very effective swell shutters are of 25mm clear Perspex. The brief was to design and construct an instrument that could serve the German style liturgy well, to provide an instrument suitable for Bach and one that would encourage students to take up the organ. |
