St. Mary's Church, Hendon, England

A church created in over 800 years of building with seemingly a new aisle added approximately every 200 years, where is an organ builder to begin in thinking about a style for such a building?

Our concept was to build an instrument at the very beginning of a millennium that reflected the past in a small way but looked to an exciting future. The case is conceived as a free standing piece of sculpture, the casework of the instrument is designed for viewing from any side. The lively curvaceous forms above the pipe fields, in three hues of blue, representing the dedication of the church, stretch up from the pipe tops to be terminated by a flowing band of gold leaf high above, these were designed by Nicholas Plumley. The toe boards and pipe foot lengths react to ever changing counterpoint.

The specification provides a broad palette of colour to accompany the large choir and wide repertoire they perform, as well as the need for service music in many styles.
